House Rule - Grenades in Assault - How many Attacks

A question has been asked about how many grenade attacks a unit who are all armed with grenades make in the assault phase.

Sixth edition rules:
Only one grenade (of any type) can be thrown by a unit per Shooting phase.

Seventh edition rules:
Only one grenade (of any type) can be thrown by a unit per phase.

The change in wording suggests that in seventh edition all phases, including assault, have a limitation - where the grenades are thrown. There is no definition of when a grenade is 'thrown'.

The individual grenade descriptions state that when making a shooting attack only one model can throw a grenade. This distinction is not made when describing the assault phase, however; it does not say that all models can use the grenades (Ie the general rule of one per phase still stands).

My thoughts are that the limitation of one grenade per unit per phase is the rule and the action of throwing or clamping a grenade into place is only a descriptor and not a rule definition.

What are your comments?

  1. The rules talk about grenades as a general rule being thrown when used and this applies to each phase, therefore only one general use grenade can be thrown each phase. The rules go out of their way, however,to say that special grenades used against vehicles, monstrous creatures and buildings are clamped not thrown. If the rules stated that only one grenade may be used per phase that rule would cover all eventualities. It doesn't, it makes a difference between ordinary granades (thrown) and special grenades (clamped).

  2. Further reading has brought up a few more points. In the black paragraph on p180, the rules make a distinction between how grenades are used,'these grenades cannot be thrown or used as a melee weapon'. This seems to suggest that a grenade is not thrown when used as a melee weapon. Why say only one grenade can be thrown per phase? Grenades are thrown in the shooting phase, can be used in special attacks in the movement phase (Eldar swooping hawks) and can be thrown as overwatch (not all grenades are blast). Lastly, grenades employed as melee weapons have a range of -, meaning they cannot be used unless used differently to a throw.

  3. Agreed.
Grenades are limited to one per squad in the shooting phase and overwatch, this does not apply for assault attacks.
The limitation in assault is only one type of grenade can be used in the assault phase Eg Space Marines can not use Assault grenades for charging into assault and Krak grenades in combat.
Mechanicus have one type of grenade that has two effects so this can be used for charging into assault and for attacks.
Also a unit can not use one type of grenade for overwatch and another type for attacks.

  5. New FAQS out.
Only one grenade may be used in the assault phase:

Q: Using grenades in the Assault phase.
Can every model replace their close combat attacks with a single grenade attack or just one model in the unit? Like in the Shooting phase e.g. a unit of 5 Tau Pathfinders charge a Knight. Do 5 Pathfinders make close combat haywire grenade attacks?
A: Only one model from the unit can attack with a grenade in the Assault phase.
