I would like to propose that the moral check during the Assault Phase triggered by losing a combat based on the number of wounds sustained is changed to being triggered by the percentage of unit wounds lost in the phase (25% as per loses in the Shooting Phase) and that there is no modifier based on the number of wounds sustained.
My reasoning behind this is that I feel it unfairly discriminates against large number/low cost units, such as those common in Ork armies. The Ork codex appears to have been written on the basis that low abilities (BS, saves, armour, invulnerability etc...) are balanced out by low cost i.e. that higher spec opponents are resisted by weight of numbers rather than abilities. With the current arrangement for moral in the Assault Phase it is common for a largely intact Ork unit to be wiped out through failing a morale check and the resulting 'sweeping advance' (which Orkz also tend to be disadvantaged in due to low initiatives across the board).
I do note the Ork 'Mob Rule' ability which gives them an opportunity to redress a failed morale check (which in the new codex this has much reduced effectiveness) but I don't believe it addresses the above issue.
Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteIf you have, say, 20 boyz, and you lose 2 or 3 in the assault phase and you have taken out a single Wraithguard, you are in effect 'winning' that asault, however, the rules would have you losing it and force a morale check at -1 or -2. This to me is unfair. If suddenly 5 or 6 have gone (about 25%) you may start to look about, hence a morale check is needed. But at -4 or -5; this is virtually unsaveable. I think it should be the same as the shooting phase morale rules (but with the possibility of a sweeping advance) and agree with the big green whinger.
DeleteI am not against this as a change in principle but I think the Mob rule covers this:
DeleteOn a failed moral check the Orks have to roll 1D6
1 - If in combat you pass the morale check
2/3 - If there is a character, you pass the moral check
4/5/6 - If there are ten or more models, you pass the moral check.
So on the above example the 20 Boyz would have to be brought down
below 10 before they have a chance to run.
Nb.
I do think that the Mob rule 4to6 roll should be ten or more Wounds (not models) to better reflect Bikes/Kopters and Nobs.
Joe thinks that a sweeping advance should just be a free round of assault by the winning side and not an all out kill.
ReplyDeleteAs most of my troops can't be affected by sweeping advances, I don't see how I can offer an objective opinion. I'm happy to go with the consensus.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I can't help wondering why Orks are concerned about morals. Didn't think they had any....

ReplyDeleteHaving gathered everyone's feedback I propose that we trial using the 'shooting' phase approach to morale in the 'assault' phase. If it proves workable we can adopt it as a house rule.
