The Long Night

The Tyranids brought their new Hive Vanguard formation against the Eliminators standard 500.

Eliminator Warlord Trait allowed them to infiltrate, starting in good position, on the middle objectives. The Tyranid Warlord trait of re-rolling '1's in assault may have been useful, had it been remembered. 

Turn One. The massed flock of Gargoyles and terrifying Hive Tyrant moved up, Gargoyles blasting away at the Tactical Marines holding one of the centre objectives but failing their charge. The Hive Tyrant perils on a denied psychic power, took a wound and lost the Paroxysm power for the game. It shot at the paratroopers holding the other centre objective, they went to ground in their ruin and avoided all damage (it was night). The Marines and Paratroopers held one centre objective each and returned fire, causing major damage to the gargoyles and no damage to the Hive Tyrant. Score T0-E2.

Turn Two. Tyranid Warriors outflanked onto a deep objective and the gargoyles jumped to them, they all open fired at the Librarian Warlord, who took one wound. The Hive Tyrant flew over the Tactical Marines, had his psychic power denied again but was able to shoot out the heavy weapon from the back of the marines. More paratroopers arrived but scattered a little wide of the objective. A luck bolter shot from the Tactile Marines scored a wound on the Hive Tyrant and the brave Eliminator Librarian assaulted the flock of Gargoyles. Score T2-E4.

Turn Three. The Hive Tyrant flew over to the Snipers and reduced them down to one man. Keeping near their deep objective, the Tyranid Warriors charged into the assault with the lonesome Librarian and Gargoyles but the Librarian would not die and this turn activated his Force Sword. The Paratroopers ran onto their deep objectives while their brothers on the centre objective took another wound off the Hive Tyrant, bringing it down to one wound left. Score T4-E8.

Turn Four. The Hive Tyrant flew toward the Paratroopers on the centre objective and reduced them down to one man. The Librarian survived the assault for the first half of turn four but eventually was taken down by the last Gargoyle attack for first blood and slay the warlord. The remaining single Gargoyle moved onto the other Tyranid deep objective and the Tyranid Warriors finished off the last Sniper. Score T10-E12.

Final Turn. The Hive Tyrant killed the last centre Paratrooper but remained flying so could not hold an objective. The remaining Eliminators could not get within range of any Tyranids without leaving an objective.
